Statement of Purpose

Since I was young, the manager characters in TV series were always powerful and took charge of all employees, and they seemed intellectual and omnipotent, so I dreamed of one day becoming a manager in the real world. However, it is well-known that being a manager is not as easy as it looks because it requires critical thinking to understand dynamic situations, effective communication skills, and some fundamental techniques such as database management. Attempting to approach this dream, I majored in Hospitality Management, one significant branch of Management Science, while pursuing undergraduate degree in China. In addition, I used to work at Shangri-La hotel as a trainee for six months and at Huaxi financial securities as an intern for several weeks to put knowledge into practice. Nevertheless, lacking of more professional knowledge alerts me to keep pursuing a higher degree to enrich myself. I believe that MS in Management of George Mason University will help me to achieve that.

As mentioned before, I completed my undergraduate study in Yinxing Hospitality Management College of Chengdu University of Information Technology in China, and four years in college has taught me that diligence and desire to learn is equally important. Goals cannot be achieved in one day, so consistency plays a great vital role in my academic life. Therefore, I attribute my academic success, a great GPA, to hard work, and I will continue to apply this specific characteristic to my academic life in GMU.

After graduation, I was seeking an internship to gain a better understanding of Hospitality Industry. I worked as a GRO, guest relation officer, as Shangri-La hotel for six months. During the internship, observing the work process of each employee in my department, Front Office, showed me how a five-star hotel works. Our boss Kevin, the front office manager, was from Malaysia and always effective and confident. I thought he must be born with confidence. However, one story from my co-worker who is working in Singapore now really changed my view. Kevin once encouraged her by telling his true experience: he started working as a doorman and used to be too shy to greet guests. If guests shout at him, he would even tremble with fear. Everything he owned today attributed to his continued effort. Consistency and determination have a great impact on one’s life. Although I do not know what exactly he did to change his life, I will strive to be someone like him.

Currently, I am studying in management pathway program in INTO mason, and the EAP course significantly improved my writing skills, especially academic writing in Western Culture. When I take the courses, the professors encourage us to find out what is the writing conventions of my discipline, to practice analytical summary, and to help us correct our common grammar mistakes. Eventually, I got 91 out of 100 last semester.

Effective management is a foundation of operating a company. I have been interested in learning how to manage the most crucial resource ‘employees’ in order to maximize the profit of one corporation since the 2008 financial crisis. In addition, I am impressed by GMU’ s consistently increasing reputation and ranking due to its resources – great students, faculty, and education. To be more specific, I browse the course calendar in advance, and I believe courses, such as economics for successful firm management and financial management in a global environment, will teach me professional theories within management field to broaden my perspective. Therefore, as a student already studying in Fairfax campus, I am confident that GMU would offer excellent curricula and extracurricular assistance for helping every student. Moreover, responsibility is one of my greatest strengths, and it is vital factor both in learning and working. This trait will keep reminding me my goals, which are getting in GMU’ business school and getting on a path toward to my career. Therefore, I am willing to pursue MS in management and make my contributions in the School of business at George Mason University.
